Zonalon Cream Description

It is not fully understood how the active ingredient (Doxepin) in Zonalon Cream works to reduce itchy skin; however, it does have antipruritic and histamine receptor blocking abilities. When Zonalon Cream is applied as directed, your H1 and H2 receptors are not able to become stimulated so histamine production is decreased. Histamine 1 is one of the chemicals in your body that reacts to an injury or threat by flooding the area which causes blood vessels to widen and provides a better blood flow to help the area but also results in causing your symptoms. This includes itching and scratching, and itching some more. Because Zonalon Cream has this antihistamine effect, you may become drowsy as the medication is absorbed into your body.

Conditions Treated by Zonalon Cream

Neurodermatitis, also referred to as lichen simplex chronicus, may start as a simple irritation from a bug bite, stress, or certain items of clothing. This area of skin then itches, so you scratch it and hope for relief but the itching can grow more intense so you scratch more. The parts of your body most likely to be affected by neurodermatitis are the back of your neck, wrist, forearm, thigh, or around your anklebone.

The action of long-term scratching of any of these parts of your body can result in thickened or leathery feeling skin. Many believe the sedative effects of histamine blockers are the reason you scratch less or notice the itching less. For eczema flare-ups, apply Zonalon Cream topically to the irritated skin areas for up to eight days.

Before Zonalon Cream is Prescribed

Be sure to provide your doctor with a complete medical history, including whether you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding to determine if Zonalon Cream is safe for you to apply. Tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any current OTC or Rx drugs you take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.

Zonalon Cream Precautions

If you experience drowsiness after Zonalon Cream has been absorbed, you should not drive, operate machinery, or perform any task that requires you to be alert. Do not apply other topical medications while using Zonalon Cream without first talking to your doctor. Follow your treatment plan and revisit your doctor after 8 days if your condition has not improved. Keep all medications stored out of children’s reach and never these meds with anyone else.
