Latest National Poll Shows Significant Support for Importation of Prescription Drugs from Reputable Online Pharmacies

public opinion on prescription drug importation

September 22, 2016

A newly released national survey, conducted earlier this year by Morning Consult on behalf of the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI), revealed that seventy percent of Americans surveyed expressed concern about the high cost of prescription medications for themselves or someone in their household. Sixty−five percent of those responding supported the safe importation of medications from verified and licensed international pharmacies.

The high cost of prescription drugs in the USA is clearly very concerning to the majority of Americans. Many seniors and those living on a fixed income are often forced to do without prescribed medications because of the high cost and many Medicare enrollees are unable to fill their prescriptions when they reach the "donut hole". Many chronic diseases can be effectively managed through the use of long−term medications, however, the CPPI survey also discovered that one in three respondents did not fill a prescription due to cost while one quarter of them split pills or skipped doses.

Medication nonadherence is an important public health consideration that affects the health of millions of Americans and contributes to overall health care costs. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) estimates that between $100 and $300 billion of avoidable health care costs can be attributed to nonadherence in the US annually.

What is the solution to avoid serious health consequences for patients and lower costs to the healthcare system and taxpayers? A few attempts have been made to make drug manufacturers accountable for high prices and politicians continue to propose legislation to provide solutions and that may help in the future. But Americans urgently need access to affordable medications now.

Sixty-five percent of those polled by Morning Consult support the safe importation of medications from verified and licensed international pharmacies which already provide a vital resource for millions of Americans. You can learn how to protect your access to safe and affordable medications through the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation, a national nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of Americans to help tackle the high cost of drugs in the USA. You can sign up to receive important newsletters or contact your elected representatives through the CPPI website to be part of the solution.
