Can I Get OTC Medications at Online Pharmacies?

online pharmacy customer service

Computer on desk

When people visit our website, they’re typically looking for a very specific prescription drug that is exorbitantly expensive elsewhere. Obviously, we’re always happy to connect people to more affordable prescription medications (often at a very steep price cut — particularly with brand names), but many customers seeking a Canadian online pharmacy or international drugstore don’t realize that we can also sell over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

Over-the-counter medications are sold at pharmacies, most grocery stores, and even gas stations, to a certain extent. They’re typically lower concentrations or different formulations of prescription drugs, which makes them reasonably safe for the average consumer to take, provided that they follow the instructions on the packaging.

OTC medications include pain relievers, antacids, cold and flu medications, allergy medication, antiseptic ointments, first aid, antifungals, smoking cessation agents, lice treatments, and more.

It’s important to note that in the U.S., some OTC medications are considered quasi-controlled, but not so much that they require a prescription. In these cases (often with certain types of cold and sinus formulations), the medication is stored behind the pharmacy and a valid identification card (driver’s license or state ID) is required for purchase. The volume that any given person is buying is then tracked and flagged if the amount is significant.

Our OTC medication selection is easily accessible from this page (organized by category) or by using the search bar in the top right hand corner of our website.

For your convenience, here are the most common OTC medications we sell at NorthWestPharmacy.com.

Anti-Nausea Medication

Transderm-V Motion Sickness Patch

Transderm-V (also called Transderm Scop) is a patch you place on the skin behind your ear to prevent motion sickness on a plane, boat, or automobile. The active ingredient is scopolamine, which is absorbed through the skin and acts as an anticholinergic. This simply means that it turns off a neurotransmitter that can cause nausea and vomiting.

Something like this is often purchased before people travel (whether for work or pleasure) when they know they’ll be on planes or are going on a cruise.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, you can buy online 2-packs of Transderm-V patches for about $21.00.

Stugeron Regular

Stugeron Regular (cinnarizine) is an antihistamine, but this particular product is unique in that it also controls motion sickness. Cinnarizine can help alleviate feelings of nausea, vomiting, dizziness and spinning sensations (such as those associated with vertigo), and even ringing or other noise in the ears (tinnitus) associated with Ménière’s disease and other middle ear disorders.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, brand name Stugeron Regular starts at about $25.00 for 15 tablets. The generic version starts at about $36.00 for 84 tablets.

Constipation Relief

Senokot S Tablets (with Stool Softener)

Senokot S (with stool softener) is a common OTC medication for constipation. It contains two active ingredients to accomplish the same goal through two different methods. Sennosides is a stimulant laxative that helps keep water in the intestines, while the second drug, docusate sodium, serves as a stool softener.

Constipation can occur for any number of reasons, including a change in diet, travel, surgery, and some medications. The reason Senokot S is so popular is because it’s gentle and works overnight in most cases.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, you can buy Senokot S tablets online starting in packs of 60 for about $26.00.

Senokot Tablets

The Senokot tablets previously described included a stool softener, but this variation does not. These are the original Senokot tablets (containing the same active ingredient, sennosides — a laxative) that will provide gentle constipation relief overnight.

Name brand Senokot starts at $16.00 for a pack of 30 tablets, or you buy with generic version, which starts off at $15.00 for 100 tablets.

Senokot Syrup

Besides tablet form, Senokot (sennosides) also comes in syrup form. This is often preferred for people who have trouble swallowing pills. This is the same product as regular Senokot — there is no stool softener agent in this medication.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, you can buy a generic form of Senokot syrup starting at $25.00 for a 250 milliliter bottle.

Allergy/Nasal Relief

Allegra

Allegra (fexofenadine) is a popular OTC allergy medication. One of the reasons so many people choose Allegra is because it’s so versatile — it will treat many different symptoms of allergic reactions, including itching, hives, rashes, tearing and redness of the eyes, sneezing, and runny nose.

Like other allergy medications, Allegra is an antihistamine, which means that it blocks your body’s reaction to the histamine (the chemical released when your body is exposed to an allergen). It will not actually stop the histamine itself, but instead will suppress your body’s reaction to it.

Both brand name Allegra and generic fexofenadine come in a few different dosages (30 mg, 60 mg, 120 mg, and 180 mg). At NorthWestPharmacy, you can purchase either name brand (all dosages) or generic (120 mg or 180 mg).

Brand name Allegra starts off at about $20.00 and goes up to about $70.00, depending on the quantity you’re purchasing. The generic is just a little bit less expensive.

Tavist Allergy

Tavist Allergy (clemastine) is another antihistamine that is popular because it treats a large variety of allergy symptoms. Again, antihistamines do not prevent the body from making the histamine itself, but rather suppresses your immune system’s response to it.

Brand name Tavist Allergy starts at about $35.00 for 60 tablets. You can also buy the generic version, which starts at about $36.00 for 100 tablets.

Zyrtec (Reactine in Canada)

Zyrtec (called Reactine in Canada) is one of the most popular allergy medications on the market. The active ingredient is an antihistamine called cetirizine and it will treat most allergy symptoms, including hives and rashes.

Zyrtec comes in 5 mg and 10 mg doses and is available in both the brand name and a generic. Brand name Zyrtec starts at about $37.00 for 36 tablets, while the generic starts at about $17.00 for 100 tablets.

Dristan Nasal Mist

Dristan Nasal Mist contains two active ingredients in order to provide relief from cold and flu symptoms. Phenylephrine hydrochloride (HCL) is a decongestant that shrinks the blood vessels in your nasal passages to relieve sinus pressure and congestion. The second active ingredient is pheniramine maleate, which is an antihistamine.

You can buy a 15 milliliter Dristan Nasal mister for about $10.00, or you could purchase a 30 milliliter mister for about $15.00.

Smoking Cessation

Thrive Nicotine Lozenges

OTC smoking cessation products span the gamut from gums to patches to lozenges — one isn’t necessarily more effective than another but is rather a matter of which one a person is more likely to stick with and seems to find relief through.

Thrive makes nicotine lozenges, which contain 1 mg or 2 mg of clean nicotine per lozenge (depending on how heavy your habit is). When you feel the urge to smoke, you pop a lozenge into your mouth and suck on it until the nicotine flavor is strong. Then, you leave it in your mouth between your cheek and teeth until it dissolves completely.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, you can buy 36-packs of 1 mg Thrive nicotine lozenges starting at about $18.00 ($0.50 per lozenge). We also sell this dose in packs of 108 for about $45.00 ($0.42 per lozenge). The 2 mg dose is just slightly more for the same quantities.

Nicorette Nicotine Gum (Original)

Nicorette is one of the most common smoking cessation aids because it’s so accessible and helps fulfill the oral fixation part of smoking. Some people who are trying to quit smoking chew gum anyway, and Nicorette allows the user to get a small nicotine fix to curb withdrawal symptoms.

There are many flavors, but the original is very popular. It comes in 2 mg and 4 mg doses and begins at about $20.00 for a pack of 30 pieces of gum.

Nicorette Nicotine Gum (Fruit)

Another popular version of Nicorette nicotine gum is the fruit flavor. This flavor also comes in doses of 2 mg and 4 mg and begins at about $23.00 for a pack of 30 pieces of gum.

Nicorette Nicotine Gum (Fresh Mint)

As one might expect, the fresh mint flavor of Nicorette gum is another popular one. Fresh mint comes in 2 mg and 4 mg doses as well, but there is also a generic version available.

We sell the brand name Nicorette gum starting at about $20.00 for a pack of 30 pieces. The generic is less expensive, starting at $22.00 for 90 pieces.

Antacids

Prevacid OTC

Prevacid OTC (lansoprazole) is a common proton pump inhibitor medication that cuts down the amount of acid your stomach produces by inhibiting the enzyme that plays an active role in creating it. Prevacid OTC is used to treat and/or prevent intestinal or stomach ulcer, in addition to other health conditions related to an overabundance of stomach acid, such as erosive esophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Prevacid was initially sold in a prescription strength formula (30 mg). Prevacid OTC is only 15 mg. Brand name Prevacid OTC costs about $85.00 for 30 capsules. The generic starts at about $40.00 for 100 capsules.

Prilosec OTC

Prilosec OTC (omeprazole) is a lesser concentration (20 mg) of the prescription strength Prilosec (usually 40 mg, but can also be prescribed at 10 mg). It is a proton pump inhibitor designed to cut down on the amount of stomach acid present that can cause gastrointestinal issues.

Prilosec OTC is not intended to be a fast-acting formula but is rather a once daily medication to help prevent the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and ulcers. After 14 days of consecutive treatment, these symptoms can be alleviated, and can even allow time for your stomach lining to heal.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, you can buy brand name Prilosec OTC starting at $36.00 for 14 tablets. The generic starts at $40.00 for 30 tablets.

Muscle and Joint Pain Relief

Myoflex Cream Maximum Strength Pain Rub

Myoflex Cream Maximum Strength Pain Rub (trolamine salicylate) provides topical pain relief for sore muscles and joints. One of the reasons this specific medication is so popular is that it doesn’t stick to clothes or stain them, as many others do. Because it’s a cream, it absorbs into the skin in the same way a lotion would.

Brand name Myoflex Cream Maximum Strength Pain Rub is not currently available in generic form. You can purchase a 100 gram tube for about $16.00 at NorthWestPharmacy.com.

Lice/Scabies

Nix Dermal Cream

Nix Dermal Cream 5% (Permethrin) is a cream used to treat scabies. It works by killing the mites that cause scabies, lice, and other pests. Typically, one 30-gram tube will cover one adult, but sometimes a second tube is necessary. Additionally, each family member in close contact with the person infected will need treatment to prevent a recurrence.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, buy a 30-gram tube of brand name Nix Dermal Cream 5% for about $26.00. The generic costs about $17.00 for the same 30 gram tube.

Dandruff Relief

Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo

Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo (ketoconazole, an antifungal) is often recommended for people with chronic dandruff who aren’t experiencing any kind of relief from what they can find in the shampoo aisle. Dandruff is caused by an overabundance of Malassezia yeast, and ketoconazole will not only kill the existing yeast, but prevent new yeast from growing. By getting rid of the dandruff, itching and redness will also subside.

At NorthWestPharmacy.com, we sell brand name Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo starting at $14.00 for a 60 milliliter bottle.
