Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (Similar to Pregnyl)

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, similar to Pregnyl) is sometimes used during the course of fertility treatment in order to encourage the natural maturation and releasing of an egg. If hCG sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same hormone that pregnancy tests use to detect whether you’re pregnant or not. Presence of the hormone triggers a positive test result.

Human chorionic gonadotropin is injected at a specific time during the menstrual cycle — typically when ovulation should be taking place. About 36 hours after injection, the person should ovulate, giving the couple a more pinpointed window of time for intercourse.

Additionally, this is a way for people doing intrauterine insemination (IUI) to improve the chances of successful fertilization. If a person has chosen in vitro fertilization (IVF), an injection can help ensure successful egg retrieval. They can do the injection 36 hours ahead of their insemination or retrieval appointment.

At the outset of fertility treatment, physicians typically administer hCG. However, it may be impractical for someone to go into an office every month to receive an injection. Therefore, physicians often teach their patients how to do the injections so they can be done at home.

One of the interesting things about hCG is that it can also be used as a male fertility drug. In cases where the source of fertility troubles is low sperm count, hCG is sometimes administered to men in order to boost the number of sperm the man produces to increase the likelihood of conception.

Crinone Vaginal Gel

One cause of infertility or difficulty conceiving is insufficient levels of progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Adequate progesterone levels are necessary in order for an egg to successfully implant into the uterine lining (endometrium).

This deficiency occurs during what’s called the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and is sometimes called a luteal phase defect (LPD). During this phase (post-ovulation, but pre-period), the uterine walls are thickening in order to prepare for a pregnancy. If the uterine walls aren’t thick enough, the egg cannot implant.

For women with LPD, Crinone vaginal gel (progesterone) may be recommended by a physician. It is administered at home, typically by the patient herself. Crinone is pre-loaded into an applicator, so there is no measurement necessary.

Women undergoing IVF may be advised to use Crinone vaginal gel daily after insemination, and then continue for the 30 days following the confirmation of a successful pregnancy. The extra progesterone can be helpful in supporting a healthy uterine wall for a growing embryo.

Serophene (also called Clomid)

Serophene (clomiphene), also known as Clomid, is an ovulatory agent with a very successful track record for helping couples conceive. Serophene increases two very specific hormones in the body: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). FSH assists the eggs’ development in the ovaries, and LH is what triggers ovulation.

Women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are sometimes a good fit for Serophene because their hormone levels aren’t where they need to be in order for consistent ovulation to occur.

However, this particular fertility drug is not suitable for women with non-functioning ovaries. In order for Serophene to work properly, your ovaries need to be viable.

In the United States, you’re unlikely to find brand name Serophene at this point. With generic clomiphene being so readily available, insurance companies would much rather take that route. A one-month supply of 50 mg clomiphene costs about $40.00.

Gonal F* Follitropin Alpha

Gonal F (follitropin alpha) is another FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) designed for both female and male fertility treatment. For women, Gonal F helps women develop healthy eggs to be released during ovulation. In men, it supports the cells necessary to make viable sperm.

Gonal F comes in pre-measured injectable pens or pre-measure powdered vials. Much like hCG, this fertility drug is typically administered the first time by a physician but can be administered by patients once they’ve been instructed how and where to place the injection.

Purchasing Gonal F may be more affordable through a Canadian prescription pharmacy online or international pharmacy than through a doctor’s office — it all depends on your doctor’s office and your insurance company. If you’re doing the injections at home, you may find it’s cheaper to also purchase the medication on your own.

Menopur

Menopur (menotropins) is yet another FSH — like Serophene, this one contains LH, as well. If you’re sensing a pattern, it’s because there is one. FSH is a very effective fertility treatment for both men and women, but it can also be very costly. Add these circumstances to the number of times people may need to purchase fertility drugs (each month for however long it takes), and the numbers start to add up quite quickly.

In the case of Menopur, hCG is often used in order to increase the chances of ovulation. Menopur is administered first so the follicles can develop properly, and then the hCG injection. From here, the same windows of time are followed as with any other hCG injection — ovulation should occur about 36-38 hours after the injection, which is the preferred time for intercourse or egg retrieval.

In the U.S., Menopur is rather expensive, but is sold in powder vials only, which makes them cheaper than Gonal F. You can purchase a 5-pack of powder vials for about $1,110.00.
